I’ve Been Published! | Atlanta Child Photographer

So, if you’re new here…HEY! Thanks for stopping by! If you’re a regular, glad you’re back. After years of hard work, life and procrastination, I have finally completed my book! Yay me! It took more time than it should have but it has officially come to fruition. For those that don’t know what I’m talking about, I wrote a book called, If God Gave It To Me, It Must Be Good. It’s a collection of stories from various women about their natural hair. If you’re wondering, yes, I have my story in there as well. 

My story was actually the catalyst for the book. I don’t want to reveal it here but I had an epiphany regarding working in the IT field and being a black woman with natural hair. It wasn’t a pleasant epiphany but an epiphany nonetheless. At this particular time, my book is actually pending to be published. They say it usually takes up to 72 hours and at the writing of this blog, it hasn’t been quite that long. At any rate, the book will be on sale via Barnes and Noble’s website. Once the link is available, I will make it available to you and everyone else. 

Along with being a wife, mother, and award-winning photographer, I am now a book author, as well. It’s actually pretty cool, you know? For some reason, I never really thought about writing a book. Reading a book is one thing, but writing one is completely another. It started as a small idea and had many different iterations before this point. I guess I needed all that time to truly organize the book in a way that made sense. My favorite part of creating the book was photographing the women. Some of the women I knew, others I met online or just randomly. It was truly a labor of love. 

Even though I am an author now, I don’t feel like an actual “writer”.  However, I do consider myself a storyteller. This book was meant more to be a coffee table book. I wanted more pictures than I wanted pages with text. The text was just icing on the cake so you could see where they came from, how they got there and where they are now. Context is very important. I was very deliberate about the women I selected. I wanted to try to include as much diversity as I could. Being that black women come in a multitude of hues and hair textures, I wanted to represent a wide range of beauty. I didn’t want anyone to feel left out or like I was discriminating. 

Funny story. I ordered a copy to make sure that it was printed to my liking. When the book arrived I was so excited, until I opened the book. The title page was printed upside down. I can’t even fathom how that happened but it did. I reported it and I suppose they are investigating how that happened. What I also realized was that I didn’t like the matte finish on the book, so I created a copy with glossy pages instead. All I can say is, good thing I ordered a copy to preview it first. Anyway, as I stated, the book will be for sale on Barnes and Nobel’s website and as soon as I get the link I will let you know! Oh, the book is $29.99, plus tax and shipping. And if you like this project, I’ve got another one that I’m going to start on next year! I can’t wait and I can’t wait to share it!
